Envolve Partners with Greater Portland Health to Bring Free Eye Care to Portland Community

Date: 09/15/16

Portland community residents in need will have an opportunity to receive free vision services on September 23 and 24 when Envolve's 'SeeMore' Vision Van, a traveling eye care vehicle, comes to Greater Portland Health in Portland, Maine. Adults will be served on Friday, September 23 from 3-7 p.m., and children will receive care on Saturday, September 24 from 9 a.m.–noon. Services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Thanks to a collaboration between Greater Portland Health, Envolve, and the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved (ACU), community members in need will have the chance to have their eyes checked for possible problems, receive a free vision screening and eye glasses, if needed. Patients may choose their frames on-site and receive their glasses by mail within three weeks. Flu shots will also be available for those who are interested.

“Vision care is extremely important, but unfortunately, cost can be a prohibitive factor for underserved populations,” said Leslie Clark, CEO for Greater Portland Health. “We feel very fortunate to be able to partner with Envolve and ACU to bring this incredible service to our community.”

The Vision Van has traveled nationwide offering eye care services to underserved communities since May 2015. The program has helped more than 4,300 people in 15 states since the service began.

“We aim to transform the health of the communities we serve, one person at a time,” said David Lavely, president and chief executive officer of Envolve’s vision benefits group. “Proper vision care is important to the whole health of the individuals we serve. Our mobile vision van will bring these services directly to people who might not otherwise have access to quality health care.”

Participants are reminded that parental consent is required for all children who need to see the eye doctor. Those who wish to receive a flu shot during the event should bring their insurance card, if available.
