Five Tips to Prevent Tooth Decay for Children's Dental Health Month

Date: 2017-02-01

ST. LOUIS, MO (February 1, 2017) – Oral health contributes to our overall health and wellbeing. In honor of Children’s Dental Health Month, the health experts at Envolve, an integrated healthcare solutions company, are pleased to share five tips to help keep your children’s teeth – and oral health – sparkling.

  1. Set a Routine. Kids naturally fall into a routine once it is repeated multiple days in a row. Set the expectation of brushing once in the morning and once before bed so your kids get into a rhythm. Brushing should start as soon as teeth start coming in – it’s never too early to form good habits!
  2. Practice Tooth Technique. You have been brushing your teeth for so long you may have forgotten what it was like to learn how to brush. Show your kids how to get every tooth, brush with them, and make it fun by brushing the length of a song at least two minutes, two times per day.
  3. Stick Out Your Tongue. A majority of bacteria is found on the tongue. Brushing the tongue and rinsing with mouthwash (depending on your child’s age) is a good way to ensure the entire mouth is clean.
  4. Visit the Dentist. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the first dental visit at age one. As soon as teeth start to come in, your child is at risk of tooth decay. Milk, formula, sweets, and even baby food can build up on your child’s teeth causing irreparable damage and even possibly the need to extract the teeth. Having a professional exam can help to make sure your child is on track for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
  5. Eat Healthy Foods. Add some tooth-strengthening super foods to your child’s diet. Acidic foods reduce the strength of enamel so consider items like milk, carrots, celery and nuts. Also, choose sugarless gum and low-sugar beverages to help ensure healthy teeth.
